Back to Basics

I LOVE to try new recipes. Show me a new way to cook with cauliflower and I’ll be grateful beyond belief!

All of these new recipes, new options, new ingredients can feel a tad overwhelming though. After all, I am the shopper, the main chef and quite frankly… The human palate can be a fickle thing!

Have you ever felt like you just need a break?

This past week, I went to make my smoothie before heading off to work at the bookstore. I looked into the abyss (my freezer) for almost a full minute before I realized I couldn’t decide which frozen fruit to toss in. What about my liquid? Did I need some orange juice today? Plain old water? Almond milk? Perhaps even a splash of coffee?

Honestly, I had no clue what I wanted. Noticing the clock, I threw in a few things, whipped it up and ran out the door. Spinach, flax, almond milk and banana. My entire drive I worried I wouldn’t be satisfied and would spend the whole morning starving until my lunch break. 40 minutes later I took a sip. Sweet relief! It was not at all what I had feared.

It was simple, yet satisfying!

This past week, I have enjoyed simple smoothies, simple salads and Nosh Pot leftovers from my freezer. It has been the best, most relaxing week!

I still feel full, comfortable and completely on track. I’m not sure what brought this on. I do know that I am glad I dealt with it by simplifying rather than raiding the small school snack drawer we keep for our boys lunches!

We all have hectic lives. We all have weeks that seem to get the better of us. We all have moments of indecision. During this, our food choices do NOT need to suffer. We CAN still control our choices with little or no strain on ourselves (or our grocery bill)!

If ever you feel overwhelmed, practice the art of simplifying. Think of it as a healthy fast and slowly add foods back in as you crave them. I am enjoying some hummus and raw vegetables myself (I haven’t had hummus in over a week) as I type this. I am also enjoying my daily simple smoothies. While I will always be a sucker for the Carrot Cake Smoothie Bowl AND my own version of the Chocolate Cherry Bomb, I am happy I am taking a short reprieve.

Listen to your body. If we treat them well, they will rarely steer us wrong!
