Summer Break

I am one of those parents who looks forward to Summer vacation. I enjoy having my kids around. There is 1 thing about Summer break that never fails though…

I ALWAYS forget how much my kids can eat!

They bring their lunch to school every day. However, they eat a lot less when they are sitting in a classroom all day vs. when they are constantly burning calories at home. From the skateboard park to the pool, from hikes to bike rides… our boys are often on the move!

During their first full week off we ran out of a LOT of household staples. On multiple occasions I found myself going for my afternoon snack only to realize my hummus was gone, the oranges were gone, my celery magically disappeared and my triscuit box only had 3 crackers left!

Rather than get upset, I try to see the beauty in this. Look at all the healthy choices my kids are making! Summers past it was all about popsicle’s, animal crackers, cookies and chips.

They no longer need my prompts to pick a snack that is healthy AND energizing!

How awesome is that??!!

The lesson here is simple: Your kids ARE watching! Stock up on their favorite healthy choices so they are readily available to them. I may have gained a pound that first week (I ate a few too many nuts due to my lack of choice), but that pound is worth it. I’m certain it will be gone in no time.

Today I bought 2 bags of celery instead of 1. I grabbed nectarines, apples, oranges, plums, bananas AND a cantaloupe. I stocked up on ‘Make Your Own Trail Mix’ options like dried apricots, dates, pepitas, dried edamame, banana chips, raisins and dried cranberries.

This week… I am prepared!
From my home to yours, I wish you all a healthy and safe Summer. Stay hydrated, eat well and remember to protect your skin!
